My 96' slips into fifth best by pulling the clutch in and, from fourth gear, lifting the shift lever firmly and holding it in the up position for a full 2 seconds...it will never take that long though, as it will slide right into fifth while you're counting. I've found the "quick upward" techniques to work, at best, sporadically. I've found that this "firm upward hold" technique works consistently.

If all else fails...just stay in fourth :-)...you'll get a little more "pull" anyhow.
